Last month the Rhode Island House of Representatives voted to repeal a bill that allowed disabled workers to be paid below minimum wage. At its core, the law allows for businesses to pay disabled workers pennies on the dollar while working in a segregated setting.
The bill was introduced by Representatives Shekarchi, Edwards, Noret, Serodio, and Amore.
This is an exciting and much-needed move by the legislature as they work to ensure fair employment opportunities for all Rhode Islanders. Next up, the bill will be introduced to the Senate where we are hoping for a favorable result.
